Enggspiring Stories: Breakdown Breaks People to Breakthroughs

Updated: Jul 28, 2020

This is a story about a young engineer and pilot-to-be who faced challenges recently and discovered unexpectedly skills he never thought he has.

I first knew Vic back when we were still in college. He was an Electronics Engineering student and a happy-go-lucky guy. A typical engineering student that loves to hang out with his friends. But he has plans already after passing the boards. One of his biggest dreams is to be a Licensed Commercial Pilot!

He and his younger sister worked hard to be licensed professionals. He pursued first being a licensed Electronic Engineer while his sister is now working as a dentist. Victor then worked for few years to help him save for his flying school’s tuition. He then started his flying school last year and projected that he’ll finish by next year.

All were going smoothly as he planned! They were doing things that they love! But, the pandemic strikes.

Many businesses were hit hard and some of them were forced to close. He stopped his flying school because of his parents were worried about what might happen. His sister stopped from going to clinic as well. Unfortunately, one of the businesses that were severely affected is his parent’s restaurant, the only source of income their family has and that helped Victor and his sister be professionals

As his anxiety grew bigger and bigger, he realized many things during the quarantine. He can’t live the same lifestyle like before. He has to help his parents and his family to have an income at least to pay for their bills. He knows that the airline and travel industry might take time before it bounces back to the new norm.

He then posted this in his Facebook:

Fortunately, his cousin saw the post and told Victor that he wants to tie up with him in setting up a new business, a Japanese food business.

He knows his current skill set that time is only related about being an engineer and few things about being a pilot. He doesn’t have any idea about starting and managing business at all. But still, they started off and launched their business with just one product. They started selling what food they really love, Salmon Sashimi.

He started with no page, no advertisements, no any form of marketing materials to showcase his products. Just sending SMS to his friends, and writing down in his lucky notebook the info of his customers.

But due to his eagerness to help his family during this trying time, he self-studied about creating FB page, marketing, advertising, video editing, creating aesthetically pleasing posts, and many more.

“I decided to study and watch free videos to learn more how I can create new skills for this business. I will do everything to survive this pandemic even if it takes me to work all day. My family means the world to me and I will not think twice to give my best whatever it takes”, said Engr. Victor.

After few months since the business started, they already earned good reviews and recommendations from people at the southern part of the Metro Manila. That's why they are also now serving to the north NCR!

Currently, they added few more products in their menu such as Tuna Sashimi, Uni Sashimi and Mixed Sashi. Recently they released their newest product which is Spicy Tuna Crunch Sashimi.

“It was like I was given a pencil and I need to sell that pencil to survive the current situation. I believe that the very foundation of any business should be the quality of the product and outstanding customer service”, said Victor.

“We engineers do not take risks because we know the consequences but what i can say is that I take calculated risks. If I will not start now, when?”, he said on our last conversation.
